Sarah van Herpt is the Director of Veterinary and Behavioural Husbandry Services Department for Animals Asia Vietnam. Sarah’s department oversees all animal care projects in Vietnam, including two bear rescue centres and the organisation’s rescued elephants. In this role, she helps ensure the care and welfare of more than 180 Asiatic black bears and Malayan sun bears living at the sanctuaries.
With more than 16 years of theoretical and practical experience in animal husbandry and behaviour, Sarah has helped innovate approaches to bear care at the sanctuary. Her particular interests are cooperative care and the rehabilitation of psychologically traumatised bears. A native New Zealander, Sarah holds a BSc in Ecology and Zoology and an MSc in Conservation Biology from Massey University, as well as a Certificate in Veterinary Nursing from Otago Polytechnic. She is currently studying a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Animal Behaviour through The University of Edinburgh.
