GRAPHING
ACTIVITIES
Below
is actual data about some of the bears that visited the Vince Shute Wildlife
Sanctuary in 2002. A teacher who visited the VSWS suggested that it would
be interesting to children to have actual data that they could work with
to practice various mathematical operations: statistics, estimation, probability,
prediction, and problem solving. We have suggested a few activities for
each group of bear facts. You will undoubtedly have your own ideas, as
well. Enjoy working with the data!

HOW MANY BEARS?
facts: 15
bears were seen at the VSWS on June 15; 14 bears were seen on June 20;
10 bears were seen on June 25.
8
bears were seen on July 15; 13 bears were seen on July 20; 15 bears were
seen on July 25.
25
bears were seen on August 15; 38 bears were seen on August 20; 36 bears
were seen on August 25.
task:
Create a graph to show the number of bears at the VSWS on the
3 days in each of the months, June, July, August. Use your graph to answer
these questions:
1. Which day in each month had the
most bears? The fewest bears?
2. Which month had the most bears?
The fewest bears?
3. Bears prefer natural foods, such
as berries and nuts. When do you think the most natural foods were available?
Explain.
4. Do you know why so many bears appeared
in August? Hint: What will bears do a few weeks later in the fall?

COMPARE THESE BEARS/COMPARE
THESE MONTHS
facts: Here
is information about 6 bears: 3 boars (males) and 3 sows (females) and
the dates in the months of June, July, and August on which they were seen
at the VSWS.

7-9, 12, 17, 22 August 27, 31
BEAR 6 - SCOTTIE (boar)
June 8, 10, July 13-14,
17-24 August 14-31
tasks:
There are various possibilities for using the data presented
here. Some ideas:
1. Graph each month, and show
how many of
the 6 bears were seen at the VSWS on each day of the month. Interpret
the graph in various ways. If 2 colors are used, one for boars and one
for sows, additional inferences can be made.
2. Graph each bear's appearances
for each month. Comparisons can be made between the various bears.

ADOPTED BEARS
Below is the data about
several of our Adopt-a-Bears and how many days they were seen during each
month of the season. This information was sent to adoptees in year-end
reports. You can use the information in various ways: creating graphs,
as in the activities above, comparing bears by months, by total number
of days seen during the entire season, etc. Boars(males) can be comared
and contrasted with sows (females). If your class wants to see these bears,
they can find photos and brief biographies of the bears on our Adopt
a bear page.
